KRASNODAR, January 2. /TASS/. Veterinarians and volunteers have rescued more than 2,100 birds in Anapa and the Temryuk District of the Krasnodar Region by now after an oil tanker accident, the region's crisis management center has said.
"More than 2,100 birds were rescued in Anapa and Temryuk district. Almost 1,500 thousand were transferred to rehabilitation centers. Those birds, whose condition does not cause veterinarians’ concern begin to return to their natural environment," the news release reads.
In Anapa and the Temryuk district there are five points where birds undergo treatment. Another one is about to be opened soon in Vityazevo. At each center veterinarians examine all birds. Two places have been identified for releasing the birds into the wild - in Krasnodar, near Staraya Kuban, and in the Zaporozhye-Taman sanctuary.
The tankers Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 wrecked on December 15. One sailor died, while all others were evacuated. According to emergency response services, the tankers were carrying about 9,200 tons of fuel oil. The spill of oil products caused a disaster in the Black Sea. The elimination of the consequences is underway.
The coastline in the Krasnodar Region, polluted with fuel oil, was divided into sectors. All were assigned to local municipalities. Each delegated 100 volunteers to eliminate the consequences. According to the head of Crimea Sergey Aksyonov, most of the fuel oil has drifted towards the Krasnodar territory. In Crimea, the consequences of the spill will be eliminated before the start of the holiday season.
