ST. PETERSBURG, December 24. /TASS/. Russian language is taught in almost 4,500 secondary schools in Tajikistan, the country’s President Emomali Rahmon said at a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg.
"We teach the Russian language in institutions ourselves, in almost 4,500 secondary schools," he said.
There are enough teachers in the country, he said, "but we need to increase retraining and improve the quality of teaching."
For his part, Putin said 72 Russian teachers currently work in Tajikistan's schools, and next year their number will increase to 80.
The presidents are meeting in the Igora resort compound near St. Petersburg. According to Russian officials, during the talks the leaders will discuss migration, key issues of cooperation in the political, economic, military-technical and cultural-humanitarian areas. The presidents will also exchange views in the context of Russia's CIS presidency this year and Tajikistan's CIS presidency next year. The leaders will additionally discuss regional issues, primarily those related to Afghanistan.
Rakhmon arrived in St. Petersburg on a working visit to participate in an informal meeting of CIS leaders to be held on December 25.
