Mild tremors being recorded in central Caucasus every seven minutes

According to the North Ossetian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Unified Geophysical Service, the tremors are being recorded at a depth of about 11 kilometers

VLADIKAVKAZ, February 6. /TASS/. Low magnitude tremors are being recorded in the central part of the Caucasus following a powerful earthquake in Turkey, Director of the North Ossetian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Unified Geophysical Service Anna Sayapina told TASS on Monday.

"The Turkish earthquake intensified seismic processes in the central part of the Caucasus, including North Ossetia, South Ossetia, Chechnya and Georgia. Tremors are only being recorded by special devices, while people cannot feel them. They keep occurring every seven minutes," Sayapina said.

According to her, the agency started to make instrumental measurements in 2020 but it is the first time that this kind of seismic activity has been recorded.

A major magnitude 7.4 earthquake hit Turkey’s southeastern province of Kahramanmaras on Monday. According to the latest data, over 1,000 people have been killed in the country. The devastating quake also affected northern and northwestern Syria, killing more than 400 and leaving over 1,000 injured. A while later, a magnitude 7.7 quake struck Turkey.
