Brazil unlikely to change policy toward Russia after election - expert

The first round of Brazil’s presidential election was held on October 4

MOSCOW, October 5. /TASS/. Brazil’s policy toward Russia is unlikely to change significantly regardless of the outcome of the presidential election, journalist, international affairs commentator, translator and Latin American affairs expert Oleg Yasinsky told TASS.

"I think that despite the fact that there will be a very tense and difficult election campaign now, and it is completely unclear how it will end, I do not think Brazil’s policy will undergo any major or serious changes. Most likely, the changes will be focused more on domestic affairs than on Brazil’s foreign relations," he said.

Yasinsky cited the presidency of Flavio’s father, Jair Bolsonaro, as an example.

"The far-right government represented the interests of Brazil’s agribusiness sector and the large agricultural oligarchy, which needed Russian fertilizers," the Latin American affairs expert said.

"So, in terms of trade and everything else, everything was fine," the expert said, adding that relations between Russia and Brazil did not change during that period.

The first round of Brazil’s presidential election was held on October 4. With 84.96% of the ballots counted, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro of the right-wing Liberal Party had 48.47% of the vote, while incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva had 43.49%. Bolsonaro received 48,704,246 votes, while Lula da Silva received 43,705,754. The gap between the candidates was nearly 5 million votes in favor of the opposition candidate.
