HAIKOU /China/, May 4. /TASS/. The resort city of Sanya on the southern coast of Hainan Island recorded a sharp rebound in consumer demand and attracted tourists from all over China during the national Labor Day weekend (April 29 to May 3). This was reported by the Sanya Daily newspaper.
According to the newspaper, over the past few days there has been a significant boost in the entire local entertainment and tourism industry; only for the first two days of the holidays the city was visited by more than 370 thousand tourists. There has been an increased demand not only for hotels but also for car rentals and goods offered by duty-free stores.
There has also been a noticeable increase in the number of visitors to most attractions in Sanya. As noted by local tour operators, the average inflow of tourists was "the same as during the New Year weekend," which is the peak season for Hainan.
One of the most sought-after vacation spots this year was the scuba diving base on Wuzhizhou Island, located in the South China Sea not far from the city. According to official estimates, about 15,000 tourists visited the site daily.
Local tour operators said that visitors have been staying in Sanya for much longer than in previous years and visiting more attractions. Sailing and scooter rides are hugely popular. The city also remains a favorite honeymoon destination.
Sanya is China's leading resort, home to more than 1 million people. In 2022, its gross product was 84.71 billion yuan (approximately $12.2 billion). The city reaches an average annual temperature of 25.4 degrees Celsius and has a coastline of more than 200 kilometers. There are 19 bays and about 40 islands suitable for tourism in the surrounding waters, all of which enable the local government to successfully develop yacht and beach tourism.
