Any day could be Zelensky’s final in office, Ukrainian lawmaker believes

Donald Trump claimed that he planned to resolve the Ukrainian conflict in the near future and on January 21, the US leader told reporters that "Zelensky wants to make a deal"

MOSCOW, January 22. /TASS/. Challenging times await Vladimir Zelensky following US President Donald Trump’s inauguration, with any day potentially being his final as a leader, Ukrainian opposition legislator Alexander Dubinsky stated."We survived the hardest period from November 5 to January 20. <...> There was no escalation. And now tough times begin for Zelensky, for whom any day could become his final in power," Dubinsky wrote on his Telegram channel.

On January 20, Donald Trump was inaugurated as US president. Earlier, he claimed that he planned to resolve the Ukrainian conflict in the near future and on January 21, the US leader told reporters that "Zelensky wants to make a deal." Some experts and politicians in Ukraine believe that with Trump’s return to the White House, Washington’s support for Kiev could significantly diminish. Zelensky’s critics in Ukraine frequently pointed out clear challenges in communication between his office and Trump’s team. In turn, after the news of Trump’s election victory, Zelensky expressed hope to meet in person. On January 5, Zelensky acknowledged to US journalist Lex Fridman that he would have liked to attend the swearing-in ceremony but couldn’t without a direct invitation from Trump.

Dubinsky is an independent MP. In the spring of 2020, he was placed under US sanctions for releasing audio recordings compromising Joe Biden. He was later expelled from the parliamentary faction of the pro-presidential party, Servant of the People. In November 2023, he was arrested on charges of treason and is being held in a pre-trial detention center. Earlier, he repeatedly emphasized that Zelensky and his office chief, Andrey Yermak, will block any efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine.
