Hungarian, Slovak PMs to talk next steps after Russian gas transit cut by Ukraine

"The leaders of the two countries have repeatedly made it clear that Ukraine’s membership in NATO is out of the question and that its accession to the European Union is also fraught with numerous risks, especially for European farmers," the statement reads

BUDAPEST, January 21. /TASS/. Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orban and Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico will sit down in Bratislava to discuss a joint action plan in connection with the termination of Russian gas transit to Central and Eastern Europe by Ukraine.

The leaders will also discuss the situation around Ukraine, the press secretary for the Hungarian Prime Minister, Bertalan Havasi, said.

"The meeting will mainly focus on the energy security of Hungary and Slovakia following the termination of gas transit [from Russia] by Ukraine. Ukraine will also be discussed. The leaders of the two countries have repeatedly made it clear that Ukraine’s membership in NATO is out of the question and that its accession to the European Union is also fraught with numerous risks, especially for European farmers," Havasi said, cited by the MTI news agency.

Budapest and Bratislava view Ukraine’s decision to halt Russian gas transit starting on January 1 of this year as unacceptable because it jeopardizes Central and Eastern Europe's energy security.
