Scholz says he would like to hold phone talks with Putin again

The German chancellor emphasized that he didn’t plan to "send German servicemen to this war"

BERLIN, December 27. /TASS/. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that he would like to speak by phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin again.

"I would like that. You just can't be naive or have illusions," Scholz said in an interview with the t-online news website when asked whether he would hold phone talks with the Russian leader again.

The German chancellor also said he doesn’t plan to "send German servicemen to this war."

"It is now a matter of making sure that Ukraine is not left alone and that we continue to supply weapons. It would be more important now for everyone to see if they can do more to continue supporting Ukraine," Scholz continued.

The chancellor mentioned that he had already spoken twice with US President-elect Donald Trump on the phone.

"And we agreed that we - the US and Europe - must be in close coordination with each other on all these issues. Later, security guarantees for Ukraine will also be discussed, and Germany will play an important role there," he said.

Scholz called Putin on November 15. That was the first time they spoke by phone since December 2022. During the latest conversation, according to the Kremlin, they discussed Ukraine, the Middle East and bilateral relations between Moscow and Berlin. The president and the chancellor agreed to task their aides to maintain communication.
