Polish premier calls for stop to speculation about Polish troops being sent to Ukraine

Donald Tusk also warned against offering Kiev security guarantees that may ultimately prove to be unenforceable

MOSCOW, December 17. /TASS/. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called for an end to speculation regarding the potential deployment of Polish troops in Ukraine as peacekeepers.

"I’d like to suggest that, at this point, we refrain from speculating about what could be, or about what this or that stakeholder will do when peace or a truce is achieved," Tusk said at a press conference, aired by TVP Info.

He also warned against offering Ukraine security guarantees that may ultimately prove to be unenforceable.

"Poland still remembers what happened decades ago. Poland obtained security guarantees at some point, but they were limited to paper. We want to avoid this scenario," - he continued. "Today, with Zelensky, <…> we will discuss how the West and Ukraine can be better prepared for the coming months, but there will be no negotiations on who is ready to put troops on Ukrainian soil, and how many of them will be [deployed]."

According to an earlier report by Reuters, European Union members are still divided on whether Europe could put boots on the ground in Ukraine should a ceasefire be reached between Moscow and Kiev. The agency said that the possibility was previously discussed by French President Emmanuel Macron and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Warsaw. The latter said after the talks that Poland had no plans to deploy peacekeepers in Ukraine even if a ceasefire is achieved.

The issue was brought up in November during Macron’s talks with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Sources told Reuters that Kiev also discussed the matter with Scandinavian and Baltic countries.
