Syria’s new government to prevent attempts to split country — opposition

RABAT, December 11. /TASS/. Syria’s new authorities will not allow splitting the country and are not going to lose control over any portion of its territory, a spokesperson for the Syrian opposition’s political department told Qatar-based Al Jazeera television.

"We will not agree to disintegration of Syria, and will not let any part of its territory to break away from the control of Damascus," he said.

"We want to rebuild Syria, which is in line with its people’s wishes. We assured all ethnic and confessional groups in Syria, such as Christians, Druze and Kurds, that their property and religious sites will be untouched," he said.

On November 27, members of armed opposition groups launched a large-scale offensive against government forces' positions in Aleppo and Idlib Governorates. By the evening of December 7, opponents of Syrian President Bashar Assad had captured several major cities: Aleppo, Hama, Deir ez-Zor, Deraa, and Homs. They entered Damascus on December 8, after which Syrian army units withdrew from the city. The head of the Syrian government, Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali, expressed his readiness for a peaceful transfer of power in the country. Assad left office and fled the country. On December 10, Mohammed al-Bashir has announced that he will serve as the head of the interim Syrian government.
