Moscow-led bloc warns of broad impact of using depleted uranium in military combat

The CSTO PA Council also pointed out that the use of such munitions contaminated territories with small particles of depleted uranium, harming humans, the environment and animals

MOSCOW, December 19. /TASS/. The Council of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO PA) has issued a statement about the possible consequences of using depleted uranium munitions.

"We believe that the use of depleted uranium munitions for military purposes and related contamination carry a radiological threat to humans and the environment. We would like to highlight the high density of depleted uranium used in ammunition and its long half-life, which undoubtedly makes it possible to classify it as an indiscriminate weapon," the statement reads.

The CSTO PA Council also pointed out that the use of such munitions contaminated territories with small particles of depleted uranium, harming humans, the environment and animals.

"We also emphasize the need for additional research of the consequences of using depleted uranium in order to establish international security standards and restrictions. We call for a responsible approach to and utmost restraint in terms of using depleted uranium munitions," the document says.

In September 2023, the US announced another package of military aid for Ukraine worth $175 mln, which for the first time included depleted uranium munitions for Abrams tanks.
