Iran rejects talks with US over Trump’s maximum pressure

Replying to a question about Washington potentially imposing new sanctions on Tehran, the spokeswoman noted that the policy of maximum pressure was predictable and the government has a plan of action

DUBAI, February 12. /TASS/. Tehran is rejecting any negotiations with Washington as the US does not understand the language of diplomacy, spokeswoman of the Iranian Government Fatemeh Mohajerani said.

"Talks presume certain conditions. The language of force is not part of the negotiation process and the declared maximum pressure cannot facilitate any talks. We are saying ‘no’ to any negotiations with the opposite side (the US - TASS) because they do not understand the language of diplomacy. The world has seen that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action was signed as a result of Iran’s actions but it ended precisely with their unilateral withdrawal," the official emphasized during a press conference aired by SNN.

Replying to a question about Washington potentially imposing new sanctions on Tehran, the spokeswoman noted that the policy of maximum pressure was predictable and the government has a plan of action.

On February 4, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to reinstate maximum US pressure on Iran. The measure specifically aims to increase efforts to reduce Iran’s oil exports. At the same time, the US president did not rule out the possibility of a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian, saying that he "would like a deal done with Iran."

On February 7, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, declared that talks with the US were impossible due to Washington’s prior betrayal of Tehran. In 2015, Washington reached a nuclear agreement, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, with Tehran but failed to honor its obligations, did not lift sanctions on Iran, and ultimately pulled out of the agreement unilaterally in 2018, Khamenei pointed out.
