BUDAPEST, January 31. /TASS/. Hungary proposes to nominate Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for the Nobel Peace Prize for his mediation efforts to settle the conflict in Ukraine, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said during a press conference after a meeting with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu in Budapest Tuesday.
"Turkey is the only nation so far that has been successfully mediating in negotiations" on the settlement of the situation in Ukraine," Szijjarto said.
Thanks to the efforts of President Erdogan and Minister Cavusoglu, "the grain deal was achieved," the Hungarian Foreign Minister noted. In this regard, he stated that Hungary endorses the initiative to nominate the Turkish leader for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Szijjarto explained that the initiative belongs to Attila Tilki, a Member of the European Parliament from the ruling Fidesz - Hungarian Civic Union party, who also serves as a member of the Council of Elders of the Organization of Turkic States. The Hungarian Foreign Minister called on Turkey to continue its mediation efforts in order to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
