European countries will have to pay in rubles for Russian gas — EU envoy

Vladimir Chizhov noted that the US could only offer to replace about 10% of what was supplied from Russia to countries of the European Union

MOSCOW, March 28. /TASS/. European countries will have to switch to rubles in payments for natural gas from Russia, since the maximum amounts of liquefied natural gas that the US can supply to replace it, is only ten percent of Russian supplies, Russian Permanent Representative to the European Union Vladimir Chizhov told Rossiya-24 TV channel on Monday.

In reply to the question whether the Europeans would agree to pay in rubles, Chizhov said "they will have to do this".

"Not because this is a desirable option for them, but because so far, no matter what [US President Joe] Biden who visited Brussels and Europe, would promise, <…>, the maximum the US can offer, as it was announced during US president’s visit to Europe - is 15 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas. This is about 10% of what is supplied from Russia to countries of the European Union," the diplomat stressed.
