Germany will not take steps that would involve NATO in conflict in Ukraine — Scholz

The chancellor reiterated that "Russia must not win and Ukraine must stand"

BERLIN, May 19. /TASS/. Germany will not take steps that would make NATO a party to the conflict in Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Thursday, speaking in the Bundestag (the German parliament).

He emphasized that "Germany will not undertake individual steps." "We will not do anything that would make NATO a party to the war," the chancellor added. "To help defend a country that has been attacked - there is no escalation here," Scholz added.

The chancellor reiterated that "Russia must not win and Ukraine must stand."

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in Ukraine on February 24 in response to a request from the heads of the Donbass republics. The Russian leader stressed that Moscow had no plans to occupy Ukrainian territories and the goal was to demilitarize and denazify the country. Following this step, the West imposed large-scale anti-Russian sanctions.
