Pollution disposal after tankers crash to take more than three years — expert

Decisions should be made to create sites for temporary stocking of such waste, Sergey Ostakh said

MOSCOW, December 25. /TASS/. The period for disposal of fuel oil contamination in the Black Sea will be several times more than three years, Associate Professor of the Gubkin Research University Sergey Ostakh said at the press conference in TASS, dedicated to elimination of environmental catastrophe consequences after the shipwreck of two tankers near the Kerch Strait.

"The event taking place now is times more by volumes, by the probable damage. If then [during the 2007 accident - TASS] the whole cycle of work took about three years, from detection until disposal of the last volume of waste - it will be many times more there. It is obvious that further to a rather huge scope of work for gathering of such waste, we are dealing with fuel oil that contain toxic polyaromatic and other fractions that may have the third class of [waste - TASS] hazard," the expert said.

Decisions should be made to create sites for temporary stocking of such waste, he added.
