Arkhangelsk Region to develop certain areas of rare earth metals mining — governor

Deposits of a number of rare minerals are located in the Arkhangelsk Region

MOSCOW, March 25. /TASS/. The Arkhangelsk Region intends to develop certain areas of rare earth metals mining, Chairman of the State Council Commission on International Cooperation and Export, the Arkhangelsk Region's Governor Alexander Tsybulsky said in an interview with TASS, adding deposits of various ores are located on the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago.

"In this sense, we are not a territory excessively rich in rare earth metals, we definitely have them on the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago," he said. "We have issued a license to the First Mining Company, a license to search for manganese ores. Chances are high."

Deposits of a number of rare minerals are located in the Arkhangelsk Region. The Pavlovskoye deposit of lead and zinc ores is on Novaya Zemlya. Near Arkhangelsk, diamonds are mined at two deposits: the Lomonosov and the Grib - the only diamond deposits in Europe. "We have good projects on garnet sand, we have issued several big licenses," the governor added. "We have an interesting iodine mining project - one of the largest deposits of iodine waters, [a project] to extract iodine from groundwater."
