NEW YORK, February 11. /TASS/. Google Corporation has begun the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, with the updated name already displayed in Google Maps.
"In the US, the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) has officially updated ‘Gulf of Mexico’ to ‘Gulf of America,’" the company said in a statement published on its blog. "As we announced two weeks ago and consistent with our longstanding practices, we’ve begun rolling out changes to reflect this update," the company explained, specifying that "people using Maps in the US will see ‘Gulf of America,’ and people in Mexico will see ‘Gulf of Mexico.’ Everyone else will see both names."
In Russia, Google Maps also shows two names for the gulf.
Following his inauguration in late January, US President Donald Trump issued an executive order to rename the "Gulf of Mexico" to the "Gulf of America." The US leader justified this decision by the fact that this is the largest gulf in the world which plays "a pivotal role in shaping America's future and the global economy." In his executive order, Trump noted that the gulf is renamed "in recognition of this flourishing economic resource and its critical importance to our Nation's economy and its people." The UN stated that renaming geographic objects is not a prerogative of any single country.
