MOSCOW, December 27. /TASS/. Ukraine has received the first batch of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States in the amount of about 100 mln cubic meters (mcb), Ukrainian energy holding DTEK said.
"DTEK received the first batch of liquefied natural gas from the United States today after the LNG ship docked in Greece. The batch of about 100 mln cubic meters of gas (or 1 TWh of energy) on board the Gaslog Savannah arrived at the Revitus LNG terminal on Friday morning," the holding's website said.
It was also noted that this delivery was aimed at ensuring Ukraine's energy security and took place several days before the end of Russian gas transit through the country's territory.
On December 20, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal announced in the Verkhovna Rada that Kiev would stop transit of Russian gas at 07:00 (08:00 Moscow time) on January 1, 2025. On June 13, DTEK energy holding announced the signing of a comprehensive agreement on the supply of American LNG to Ukraine and Eastern Europe. The document was signed on the sidelines of a conference held in Berlin on June 11-12.
Ukraine imposed a ban on all trade with Russia in February 2022, except for gas and oil transit. The transit agreement between Naftogaz and Gazprom was signed at the end of 2019 for a period of five years. Russian gas will be delivered to European countries through Ukrainian territory. In November 2024, as reported by Ukrainian media, Naftogaz received the last tranche of about $70 mln from Gazprom for transit in December.
