Belarus upgrades Soviet artillery owing to special op experience

Ruslan Chekhov noted that Belarus is constantly working on developing techniques and methods of using artillery units

MINSK, February 1. /TASSS/. Belarus is upgrading its Soviet-made artillery systems and changing training programs for rocket and artillery troops based on experience gained from the special military operation, the Vayar news agency reported Wednesday, citing Ruslan Chekhov, commander of the Belarusian rocket and artillery troops.

"The experience of the special military operation in Ukraine confirms that Soviet-made artillery systems in use - 2S1 Gvozdika, 2S3 Akatsiya, 2S5 Giatsint [artillery] and BM-21 Grad [multiple launch rocket system] yield very good results, if upgraded. Such upgrades are currently being carried out at military-industrial facilities in the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus," the report says.

Chekhov noted that Belarus is constantly working on developing techniques and methods of using artillery units.

"We have developed and introduced changes to the current recommendations on the combat use of rocket and artillery force. Combat training has been organized in accordance with the updated regulations," the agency said.

In mid-January, First Deputy State Secretary of the Belarusian Security Council Major General Pavel Muraveyko said that Minsk is closely monitoring the specifics of ongoing conflicts in the world. According to the official, the Belarusian Defense Ministry "is examining all these aspects literally step by step" and "introduces them into the training of troops rather quickly."

In late October, 2022, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said that the experience of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine forced Minsk to review its approach to the equipment of the armed forces. He also said that the republic must ramp up the rate of upgrade of available Belarusian tanks.
