Global crisis caused not by UN Charter, but by its violation — Chinese Foreign Ministry

Spokesperson Guo Jiakun noted that China, as one of the first signatories of the UN Charter, has always upheld the document and promoted its implementation

BEIJING, June 26. /TASS/. The reason for the current global crisis lies not in the obsolescence of the UN Charter, but in the lack of effective compliance with the international order enshrined in it, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun said at a press briefing marking UN Charter Day.

"The root cause of various chaotic phenomena in today’s world is not that the spirit of the Charter has become outdated, but rather that the international order established by the Charter has not been effectively protected, and the fundamental norms of international relations enshrined in the Charter are not being observed in practice," the official said.

Guo Jiakun noted that China, as one of the first signatories of the UN Charter, has always upheld the document and promoted its implementation. He recalled that in May, when China presided over the UN Security Council, Foreign Minister Wang Yi held in New York a high-level meeting on safeguarding the purposes and principles of the Charter.

According to the Foreign Ministry spokesperson, nearly 110 countries participated in the discussion and reaffirmed the need to maintain the international system with the United Nations at its core, as well as the norms of international relations based on the purposes and principles of the Charter.
