Turkey’s ruling party looking at nominating Erdogan at snap election in 2027

According to AKP deputy leader Huseyin Yayman, Recep Tayyip Erdogan will be nominated by the Republic Alliance of the Justice and Development Party and the Nationalist Movement Party

ANKARA, March 2. /TASS/. Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) is looking at nominating President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for president at the snap election in 2027, AKP deputy leader Huseyin Yayman said.

"We hope that we will again nominate our president at the election in November 2027. There is no need in another candidate. We will elect out president as head of our country again at the next election," the IHA agency quoted him as saying at a meeting with party activists in Antalya.

According to Yayman, Erdogan will be nominated by the Republic Alliance of the Justice and Development Party and the Nationalist Movement Party.

The Turkiye newspaper reported in late February, citing discussions within the AK party, that the party was unofficially discussing the possibility of organizing early presidential and parliamentary elections in the fall of 2027. The rescheduling of the presidential election stems from the AKP’s plans to nominate Erdogan for president as he will not be able to run for president at the regular election in 2028 under the country’s constitution.

The opposition called on the authorities earlier to make a decision on the snap election this year. However, the parliament’s consent is needed to implement the decision on early election. Currently, the AKP and its ally, the Nationalist Movement Party, lack votes to pass a parliamentary resolution on snap elections. At least 360 votes are needed for that.

Meanwhile, both the AKP and the country’s leadership claim that the issue of the early election is not on the agenda.
