France doesn’t plan to send troops to Ukraine — Macron

Macron held an informal meeting in Paris on February 17 with the leaders of Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark and the UK

PARIS, February 18. /TASS/. France does not plan to send its troops to Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron said in an interview published in La Depeche newspaper.

"I have never announced that troops from France will be sent to Ukraine," Macron said. "France is not making preparations to send troops."

Macron held an informal meeting in Paris on February 17 with the leaders of Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark and the UK. Also in attendance were the presidents of the European Commission and the European Council, as well as the NATO secretary-general. Ahead of the meeting, the Elysee Palace said the issues for discussion would include security guarantees that can be provided to Ukraine.

The discussions lasted around three hours and concluded without a joint statement. According to news reports, the participants in the meeting disagreed over the issue of sending military personnel to Ukraine.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who was the first to emerge from the meeting, told reporters that further financial assistance to Ukraine is hobbled by issues related to budgetary deficits in European countries. He said further support for Kiev would not take a toll on industry and social security across Europe only if a separate financing channel was arranged.
