Moldova summons Russian ambassador after two drones fly in from Ukraine

The incident led to the suspension of the Reni-Giurgiulesti checkpoint for 2.5 hours

CHISINAU, February 13. /TASS/. The Moldovan Foreign Ministry has summoned Russian Ambassador to Chisinau Oleg Ozerov in connection with the downing of two drones that flew into the south of the republic from Ukraine.

"These incidents pose a serious threat to the security of our citizens and highlight the growing risks to regional stability. Fortunately, there are no casualties, but such violations of Moldovan airspace are unacceptable and cannot be tolerated. Taking into account the seriousness of these violations, the Foreign Ministry has decided to urgently summon the accredited ambassador of the Russian Federation in Chisinau to receive official explanations and express a strong protest in connection with these unacceptable actions," the ministry said in a statement on its Telegram channel.

The Moldovan police said two drones crashed in the south of the country near the border with Ukraine last night.

"Currently, there are specialists from the explosives department at both sites conducting an investigation," the General Inspectorate of Police said in its Telegram channel, adding that in both cases, no one was injured.

The incident led to the suspension of the Reni-Giurgiulesti checkpoint for 2.5 hours at night, and all employees were evacuated.

At the end of last year, five single-engine plywood aircraft fell in Moldova. None of them contained explosives. Earlier, the Foreign Ministry blamed Russia for violating the country's airspace, calling it an "unfriendly gesture."

Oleg Ozerov told reporters that these accusations are unsubstantiated, since the ownership of the UAV remains unknown. He also said that in all previous cases, when Chisinau accused Russia in connection with the discovery of UAVs, it turned out that these were fragments of missiles from the Ukrainian air defense system.
