Sudan appreciates Russia’s support amid trying times — foreign minister

Ali Youssef Ahmed al-Sharif emphasized that his country also appreciates the firm position Russia took in the UN Security Council in November 2024, when it vetoed a UK-proposed resolution

MOSCOW, February 12. /TASS/. Sudan values the support provided by Russia while the country goes through a major military conflict, Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Youssef Ahmed al-Sharif said during talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov.

"We value Russia standing by our country, by the Sudanese people, while Sudan goes through a major war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, who have repeatedly violated humanitarian law and committed serious crimes against the Sudanese people on numerous occasions," he noted.

The Sudanese foreign minister emphasized that his country also appreciates the firm position Russia took in the UN Security Council in November 2024, when it vetoed a UK-proposed resolution.

"Russia’s stance here resonated broadly and heavily with the Sudanese people, the government and all arms of our society. And the Sudanese people have gathered for large demonstrations near the Russian Embassy in Port Sudan to express gratitude," he said.

Sudan’s top diplomat thanked the Russian side for their hospitality during the delegation’s visit. He also noted that regular contact is maintained with Russian Ambassador to Sudan Andrey Chernovol.

"I want to assure you that our visit is a significant event, and we will also use it to express our gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and the Russian government, as well as Russia’s Foreign Ministry. This gratitude is coming from Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the head of the government, as well as gratitude from all representatives of our Sudanese society," he added.
