NAIROBI, February 11. /TASS/. Fighting resumed in South Kivu Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on Tuesday, AFP reported citing local security services.
According to the news agency, at dawn, rebels from the March 23 Movement and Rwandan troops attacked Congolese positions in South Kivu Province. It was noted that heavy artillery was heard not far from the town of Ihusi, approximately 70 kilometers away from Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu, and 40 kilometers away from the regional Kavumu Airport.
Sources in local security services say that reinforcements for the Congolese army are heading to Kavumu where the region’s main military base is located.
On February 8, following a summit in Tanzania, the leaders of South and East African countries called for a ceasefire within five days. The summit was attended by Rwandan President Paul Kagame, while his Congolese counterpart Felix Antoine Tshisekedi participated in a videoconference format.
