German chancellor criticizes Trump’s decision to sanction ICC

According to Olaf Scholz, these sanctions jeopardize an institution "that is supposed to guarantee that the dictators cannot just persecute people and wage wars"

BERLIN, February 7. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump's decision to impose sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC) is a mistake, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated on Friday.

"I believe it is wrong to impose sanctions on the ICC," Scholz said at a campaign event in Ludwigsburg, federal state of Baden-Wuerttemberg.

"Sanctioning [the International Criminal Court] is the wrong way [to solve political problems]. It jeopardizes an institution that is supposed to guarantee that the dictators cannot just persecute people and wage wars," the German chancellor noted.

In turn, a representative of the German Foreign Ministry suggested taking a wait-and-see approach with the US sanctions. "As currently formulated, it is not yet clear what exact consequences this [decision to impose sanctions] will have," the diplomat stated. "Germany supports the ICC and will continue to do so," the Foreign Ministry spokeswoman concluded.

Trump signed an executive order sanctioning the ICC on February 6. The US president explained that the court had "engaged in unwarranted and unsubstantiated actions targeting America and our close ally Israel." Trump believes that the ICC opened investigations into US citizens without a legitimate basis and "further abused its power by issuing unfounded arrest warrants targeting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant."

Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia does not recognize the International Criminal Court so US sanctions against the court are not Moscow’s concern.
