Around 3,000 people killed as result of hostilities in Goma — DR Congo authorities

Previously, the UN reported that around 2,900 people had been killed and 2,880 wounded in Goma as a result of the hostilities

PRETORIA, February 7. /TASS/. Around 3,000 people have so far been killed and more than 3,000 wounded as a result of hostilities unleashed by the M23 movement, who have seized the city of Goma in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a senior DR Congo government official said.

Commenting on the latest developments in the DR Congo in connection with the emergency meeting of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, which convened at his country’s request, Minister of Communications and Media, Government Spokesperson Patrick Muyaya Katembwe made several accusations against the M23 movement on his X account: "No less than 3,000 dead and over 3,000 wounded; bombing of shelters for displaced persons, attacks on civilians and UN peacekeepers, mass executions, forced recruitment of minors."

Previously, the UN reported that around 2,900 people had been killed and 2,880 wounded in Goma as a result of the hostilities.

In Muyaya’s opinion, war crimes and crimes against humanity were taking place on the country’s territory.

"Rwanda must immediately withdraw from our territory," he added.

Forces of the M23 armed group, supported by the Rwandan army, entered Goma, the administrative center of DR Congo’s North Kivu province, on January 26. They now fully control the city.
