UN says 2,900 people killed in rebel takeover of Goma in Democratic Republic of Congo

The official believes the number could rise

PRETORIA, February 5. /TASS/. At least 2,900 people have died in Goma in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo since its capture by rebels of the March 23 Movement (M23) group on January 26, a senior UN official said.

"In the last few days, 2,000 bodies have been found on the streets of Goma and another 900 are in the morgue," the AFP news agency quoted Vivian van de Perre, Deputy Special Representative for Protection and Operations in the UN Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), as saying. The official believes the number could rise. Earlier, the UN reported that 900 people had been killed and 2,880 injured in Goma.

M23 spokesman Lawrence Kanyuka earlier said that 2,500 Congolese servicemen and pro-government fighters had been killed in the fighting in Goma. There were no official figures on casualties from the army command.

Mass burials of the dead are underway in Goma and surrounding areas to prevent the outbreak of dangerous epidemics. Images of mass graves are being posted on the country's social networks.

The rebels are now in full control of the city, where normal life is gradually returning. Shops and markets are functioning, and there are many cars on the streets. Local authorities representing the M23 have ordered the opening of educational institutions this week.
