M23 rebels continue offensive in DR Congo’s South Kivu province — report

M23 units have almost complete control of the city of Goma, the capital of the North Kivu provincial, with sporadic skirmishes only in its northernmost neighborhoods

NAIROBI, February 5. /TASS/. Rebels from the March 23 Movement continue an offensive in the South Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, AFP reported, citing sources.

Backed by the Rwandan military, the rebels already captured the mining town of Nyabibwe in the province, about 100 kilometers from the regional capital Bukavu, according to the report. AFP said fierce fighting between the rebels and the Congolese armed forces erupted at dawn.

M23 units have almost complete control of the city of Goma, the capital of the North Kivu provincial, with sporadic skirmishes only in its northernmost neighborhoods. Last Thursday, the rebels announced the establishment of a committee to manage Goma. Electricity and water supplies were restored to homes in the southern parts of the city on January 30.

The DR Congo government moved the administrative center of North Kivu from Goma to the town of Beni. It is located 244 km north of Goma, close to the border with Uganda.
