Assad became victim of foreign conspiracy, Iranian newspaper says

According to the media outlet, the main reason foreign states were interested in changing the political regime in Syria was Assad’s support for the Iranian "Axis of Resistance"

DUBAI, December 9. /TASS/. Former Syrian President Bashar Assad lost his office due to a plot by foreign countries, the Asr-e Iran newspaper reported.

According to the media outlet, the main reason foreign states were interested in changing the political regime in Syria was Assad’s support for the Iranian "Axis of Resistance." It includes Tehran’s regional allies whose stated goal is to liberate Palestine from Israeli occupation, the Gaza-based Palestinian group Hamas, the Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah organization, the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, and the rebel Houthi movement Ansar Allah. Earlier, the Axis of Resistance assisted in eliminating supporters of the Islamic State (IS, outlawed in Russia) in Syria.

However, the newspaper noted that the ex-Syrian leader’s "crucial and most serious" mistake was "ignoring the demands of society," which led to him losing the support of the Syrian people.

On November 27, Syria’s armed opposition launched a large-scale offensive on the positions of government forces in the provinces of Aleppo and Idlib. By the evening of December 7, President Bashar Assad’s opponents had seized several major cities, including Aleppo, Hama, Daraa, and Homs. On December 8, they entered the Syrian capital, Damascus, while the army withdrew from the city. Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali expressed his readiness to peacefully transfer power in the republic. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Assad stepped down and left the country, having given instructions for the peaceful transfer of power.
