US state of Maine removes Trump from presidential primary ballot

The decision, issued by Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, is based on Section Three of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution

NEW YORK, December 29. /TASS/. Former US President Donald Trump has been removed from the presidential primary ballot in the state of Maine, CNN reported.

The decision, issued by Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows, is based on Section Three of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution. The amendment bans anyone who swore an oath to support the Constitution and then "engaged in insurrection" against it from holding future office. The amendment was ratified after the Civil War of 1861-65 in order to restrict the rights of politicians from the South.

However, the Trump campaign said it would appeal the decision, and Bellows suspended her ruling.

Earlier, Trump was removed from the primary ballot in Colorado.

On January 6, 2021, supporters of the then Trump administration sought to overturn the Congress’ certification of the November 2020 presidential election results. Democrat Joe Biden won the election.

The United States will hold its presidential election in November 2024. Incumbent US President Joe Biden officially launched his candidacy to seek a second White House term in late April. Former US President Donald Trump announced his plans to seek re-election in November 2022.
