EU ambassadors approve sixth package of sanctions against Russia — source

They will come into force after publication in the Official Journal of the EU

BRUSSELS, June 2. /TASS/. EU ambassadors approved the sixth package of sanctions against Russia, which also provides for a partial postponed oil embargo, a source in the EU Council told reporters in Brussels on Thursday.

"There is a decision of the ambassadors. The sixth package will come into force after publication in the Official Journal of the EU, tentatively on Friday," the diplomat said.

The European Union has already introduced five packages of economic and individual sanctions against Russia. On Monday, the heads of state and government of the EU member states agreed on the sixth package, which includes a partial embargo on Russian oil imports.

The EU countries could not reach a compromise for almost a month, since Hungary, with the support of a number of other states, opposed a complete ban on oil imports from the Russian Federation, believing that the damage from its introduction would be catastrophic for the economy. The European Commission had to mitigate its position and announced that the supply of Russian pipeline oil Budapest receives would not be banned for a time being.
