Delimitation of border with Armenia to settle territorial claims — Azerbaijani president

Azerbaijan’s president emphasized that the delimitation of state boundaries would also eliminate the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh’s status

BAKU, May 27. /TASS/. Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev has focused on importance of the first meeting of the national commissions on delimitation of the state boundaries between Azerbaijan and Armenia, emphasizing that the delimitation will put an end to territorial claims.

"On May 24, the first meeting of the commissions (on the delimitation of state boundaries - TASS) was held at the Azerbaijani-Armenian border. It is of paramount importance. On the one hand, it is crucial from the point of view that we will determine those borders, as Armenians have seized those borders as well. On the other hand, it will officially put an end to Armenian revanchist forces’ territorial claims against Azerbaijan," Aliyev said, opening the first phase of the Smart Village project in the Zangilan District on Friday.

Azerbaijan’s president emphasized that the delimitation of state boundaries would also eliminate the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh’s status.

"If we delimit the borders, what status of so-called Nagorno-Karabakh can we talk about? There is the Karabakh zone, there is the Karabakh Region. It is Azerbaijan’s territory, and the whole world recognizes this. Therefore, the first meeting of the commissions on delimitation of the Azerbaijani-Armenian border is crucial," Aliyev added.

On May 22, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev held a meeting in Brussels under the mediation of President of the European Council Charles Michel. They agreed, in particular, to hold the first meeting of delimitation commissions at the border in the coming days. On May 23, Aliyev signed an executive order to establish a state commission on the delimitation of state boundaries between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The next day, Azerbaijani and Armenian deputy prime ministers met at the border in the format of commissions on boundary delimitation.
