BOGOTA, January 29. /TASS/. Up to 12,270 new COVID-19 cases have been registered in Colombia over the past day reaching the total number of reported coronavirus cases in the country of 2,067,575, the country’s Ministry of Health and Social Protection reported on its Twitter account.
"On January 28, we confirmed 14,343 recoveries, 12,270 new infection cases and 390 deaths in Colombia," the ministry stated.
"The total number of recoveries has reached 1,894,384; COVID-19 patients - 2,067,575; deaths - 52,913," according to the ministry’s data.
As many as 605,731 infection cases have been registered in Bogota since the outbreak of the pandemic, the ministry added.
Colombia reported its first coronavirus case on March 6. President Ivan Duque declared a 30-day state of emergency on March 17. The country’s authorities later banned international flights and imposed a nationwide lockdown between March 24 and April 13. The lockdown regime was repeatedly extended afterwards.
In late December 2019, Chinese officials notified the World Health Organization (WHO) about the outbreak of a previously unknown pneumonia in the city of Wuhan, in central China. Since then, cases of the novel coronavirus - named COVID-19 by the WHO - have been reported in every corner of the globe. On March 11, 2020, the WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic.
According to the US-based Johns Hopkins University, which relies on data from international organizations, federal and local authorities, some 100.9 million people worldwide have been infected with the novel coronavirus and more than 2.1 million died since the outbreak of the pandemic.
The United States is currently in the top of the registered COVID-19 cases, which stand at over 26,287,920, while the death rate in the country exceeds 442,630. The country ranks first in the world in terms of the reported coronavirus cases and deaths, caused by COVID-19. Colombia is currently ranked 11th in the world in terms of the reported novel coronavirus cases.
