MOSCOW, August 16. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin has congratulated Russia’s boxer Yevgeny Tishchenko for clinching the Olympic heavyweight gold in Rio, the Kremlin website reports.

"You have proved convincingly that you possess the spirit of a true champion and top-level skills. These qualities, your self-confidence have become components of your dazzling Olympic success," the telegram read.

The president wished the athlete success, new victories and all the best.

Boxer Yevgeny Tishchenko has won the gold medal in the 91 kg Olympic event in Rio.

Tishchenko, 25, scored 3-0 in the final against Vasily Levit of Kazakhstan. This medal is the first for the Russian boxing team at the 2016 Olympic Summer Games.
