World Aquatics confirms Russian swimmers to receive prize money for Budapest event

A total of 27 Russian swimmers have been granted neutral status to participate in the 2024 World Aquatics Championship, which took place in Budapest, Hungary, on December 10-15

SAINT PETERSBURG, December 20. /TASS/. The world’s governing body of swimming sports, World Aquatics, has confirmed that Russian athletes who won medals at the 2024 World Swimming Championship in Hungary will receive their prize money, a senior official with the Russian Swimming Federation, told TASS on Friday.

Russian swimmers won six gold and four silver medals at the 2024 World Aquatics World Championship (25m) in Hungary, netting them over $117,000. World Aquatics pays these cash awards through national federations.

"We [the Russian swimming body] are tackling this matter head on, and it will be settled within the framework of cooperation," First Deputy Vice President of the Russian Swimming Federation Vladimir Salnikov told TASS.

The World Aquatics press office confirmed to TASS earlier that Russian swimmers would have the right to claim their prize money from the recent world championship in Budapest.

2024 World Aquatics Championship (25m)

A total of 27 Russian swimmers were granted the right to participate as neutrals in the 2024 World Aquatics Championship (25m), which took place in Budapest, Hungary, on December 10-15.

In March 2023, World Aquatics (known as FINA until December 2022) decided to bar Russia and Belarus from participating in any future FINA-sanctioned international swimming events.

Before the World Aquatics ruling in March 2023, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued recommendations on February 28, 2022, advising international sports federations to exclude athletes from Russia and Belarus from participating in international tournaments.
