KRASNOYARSK, March 5. /TASS/. The Russian national team ranks first in the team event after the fourth medal day of the 2019 Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk.
On Wednesday, Russian athletes contested 12 sets of medals, winning seven gold, seven silver and five bronze medals. Russian athletes have won 19 out of 39 medals.
Russia’s biathletes Yekatenina Moshkova and Eduard Latypov, skier Alexander Terentyev, snowboarder Milena Bykova and Dmitry Karlagachev, freestyle skier Lana Prusakova and the women’s national team in short track snatched gold.
The men’s national team in short track, snowboarders Dmitry Sarsembayev and Natalia Soboleva, freestyle skier Anastasia Tatalina, skier Khristina Matsokina, biathletes Dmitry Ivanov and Irina Kazakevich bagged silver.
Short track speed skater Yekaterina Efremenkova, biathletes Tamara Voronina and Nikita Porshnev, skiers Polina Nekrasova and Andrei Sobakarev won bronze.
Apart from that, the Russian women’s national bandy team roamed over the US squad with 10-1 win to make it through to the finals. The men’s national bandy team beat Finland 8-1 and reached the knockout stage. The Russian men’s curling team lost to Norway 2-11 and to Switzerland 5-7. The Russian women’s ice hockey team roamed over the US squad with 10-0.
In figure skating, Maxim Kovtun was first and Andrei Lazukin third after the short program. In pair skating, Anastasia Poluyanova and Dmitry Sopot, Alisa Efimova and Alexander Korovin, and Alexandra Koshevaya and Dmitry Bushlanov were first, second and third respectively after the short program.
South Korea is second with 12 medals (six gold, two silver and four bronze). Switzerland ranks third with two gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
2019 Winter Universiade
The Russian Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk, which has a population of over one million, was elected to host the 2019 Winter Universiade at the session of the FISU Executive Committee in Brussels in 2013. The event takes place from March 2 to 12, 2019.
The Winter Universiade is an international sporting and cultural festival, which is staged every two years in a different city. The name of the international sports event is a combination of two words, which are ‘University’ and ‘Olympiad.’
It is only second to the Olympic Games. The program of the Winter Universiade currently includes six compulsory sports (8 compulsory disciplines) and up to 3 optional sports chosen by the host country.
The 2019 Winter Universiade in Krasnoyarsk offers 76 sets of medals in 11 sports competitions, which are Alpine Skiing, Curling, Biathlon, Figure Skating, Cross-Country Skiing, Ice Hockey, Snowboard, Short Track Speed Skating, Freestyle Skiing, Bandy and Ski Orienteering.
