'Absolute loss of sovereignty': Russian MFA on Scholz's decision to send tanks to Kiev

Zakharova noted that Scholz in fact signed off on "the rejection of an independent German foreign policy"

MOSCOW, January 27. /TASS/. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has, in fact, renounced German sovereignty by deciding to supply Leopard tanks to Ukraine, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told a news briefing on Friday.

"The day the decision was made in favor of supplying Leopard tanks was historic. It was all the more historic because it finally testified to and cemented what we had been talking about for quite a long time - Germany’s absolute loss of sovereignty," she said.

Zakharova noted that Scholz in fact signed off on "the rejection of an independent German foreign policy."

"He destroyed everything that his predecessors had built over decades after World War II," she added.

On January 25, the United States announced its intention to provide 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Kiev. The German government confirmed that it would send 14 Leopard 2A6 tanks to Ukraine from the Bundeswehr reserves and issue re-export permits to other countries. The defense ministries of Norway and Slovakia also announced their intention to dispatch tanks to Ukraine. Earlier, the decision to provide Kiev with tanks was announced by the authorities of Britain, France and Poland.
