Initiative on UNSC permanent members’ summit still relevant — Russian diplomat

It is reported that such a five-party dialogue can give an impetus to the establishment of constructive cooperation among all countries concerned to build a new architecture of security and restore a reliable system of agreements in the sphere of arms control

GENEVA, January 24. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s initiative of a summit of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council to discuss the most challenging global problems is still important, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Geneva office Gennady Gatilov said on Tuesday.

"Given our Western partners realize their responsibility for the future of humankind and are ready for an equal and mutually respectful dialogue, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s initiative to convene a summit of the leaders of the UNSC permanent member nations to discuss the most serious global problems, which was advanced in January 2020, is still topical," he said at an annual session of the Conference on Disarmament.

"Such a five-party dialogue can give an impetus to the establishment of constructive cooperation among all countries concerned to build a new architecture of security and restore a reliable system of agreements in the sphere of arms control, disarmament and nonproliferation," he said, noting the importance of the January 3, 2022 statement by the leaders of the five nuclear nations, "one of the key elements of which is a political commitment to prevent an arms race."
