Putin supports Tokayev’s idea to create organization to promote Russian language in CIS

The CIS has declared this year the Year of Folk Arts and Cultural Heritage, while 2023 will be the Year of the Russian language

ST. PETERSBURG, October 7. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin has supported the proposal of his Kazakh counterpart Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to establish an international organization under the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) auspices to promote the Russian language.

When opening the informal CIS summit on Friday, the Russian president drew attention to Tokayev's idea to create "an international organization to support and promote the Russian language" under the CIS auspices. "We are very grateful to President Tokayev for this, I think it is important for everyone, bearing in mind that the Russian language is certainly a language of interstate communication," Putin said.

The Russian leader believes that the implementation of this idea "has a practical dimension, taking into account that millions of CIS citizens work in Russia, [people] who help both Russia in the implementation of its development plans and themselves earn the necessary funds to support their families."

"Of course, we support Kazakhstan's proposal and on our part we will do our best to put it into practice as soon as possible, especially taking into account that 2023 will be declared the Year of Russian as the language of interstate communication in the CIS," the Russian president said.

The CIS has declared this year the Year of Folk Arts and Cultural Heritage, while 2023 will be the Year of the Russian language. CIS Executive Secretary Sergey Lebedev earlier said that the Council of Heads of State planned to declare 2024 the Year of Volunteers, and 2025 will be the year of the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
