Russia to take practical steps to circumvent illegitimate Western sanctions — Lavrov

Sergey Lavrov said Russia also sees sanctions as an instrument of Western policy aimed at "undermining the principle of sovereign equality of states"

MOSCOW, March 30. /TASS/. Russia will seek to condemn the West's illegitimate sanctions in international discussions. The country, with partners’ support, plans to take practical steps that will allow circumventing such measures, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on Wednesday in Tunxi, China.

"In our relations with Iran and with other close partners, we will both seek to condemn this unacceptable phenomenon in international discussions and to take practical steps that will allow us to circumvent these illegal actions," the Russian foreign minister said.

Lavrov said Russia also sees sanctions as an instrument of Western policy aimed at "undermining the principle of sovereign equality of states."

"We see blatant, persistent attempts to revise the foundations that are laid in the United Nations charter. And above all, attempts by our Western colleagues to undermine the principle of the sovereign equality of states, the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries. One of the tools of such unacceptable policy is mechanisms of unilateral illegitimate sanctions," he added.

At the same time, Lavrov noted Moscow's interest in building up its partnership with Tehran and appreciated the opportunity to hold a meeting with the republic's foreign minister.
