Rosatom offers VVER-1200 reactor for first NPP in Kazakhstan — republic’s authorities

The so-called fuel pellets for the reactor could be produced in Kazakhstan, the Agency for Atomic Energy said

ASTANA, June 16. /TASS/. Russia’s state corporation Rosatom has proposed that Kazakhstan build the republic’s first nuclear power plant (NPP) using the VVER-1200 reactor, the Agency of the Republic of Kazakhstan for Atomic Energy reported.

"Rosatom offers its reliable and proven technology, the VVER-1200 nuclear reactor. Power units of this type already successfully operate in Russia, Belarus, and China, and they are also being built in Turkey, Egypt, China, Bangladesh, and Hungary," the report said.

The so-called fuel pellets for the reactor could be produced in Kazakhstan, the agency added. "Speaking about the production of pellets for VVER-1200 fuel assemblies, their production could be organized at the Ulba Metallurgical Plant in Ust-Kamenogorsk. If the full assembly of fuel clusters is intended, Kazakhstan already produces assemblies for Chinese reactors, and the possibility of localization of certain stages of the nuclear fuel cycle on the territory of the Republic of Kazakhstan will be discussed at the talks with Russia," the agency’s press service noted.

The agency announced on June 14 that Russia’s Rosatom would lead the consortium for the construction of the first NPP in Kazakhstan since it made the best offer. The completion of the NPP construction is planned by 2035 or 2036.
