HAIKOU, China, June 10. /TASS/. Over the past five years, Sanya, a city in the southern Chinese province of Hainan, has become an important center for international consumption and tourism. It has also made significant contributions to the development of a free trade port, according to the Sanya Daily newspaper.
Sanya has consistently promoted reforms, openness, and high-quality economic development in order to become an attractive city for living, tourism, and business. Duty-free trade and tourism have become important drivers of local economic development.
The newspaper notes that Sanya is continuously improving its tourism products and services and actively developing international transport links. Phoenix International Airport has launched 32 new flights since 2023, connecting Sanya with 24 cities around the world. To date, this airport has served over 1.1 million passengers. As for duty-free trade, Sanya's shops account for over 60% of Hainan Province's total duty-free sales.
Since the launch of the Hainan Free Trade Port project five years ago, Sanya has made significant progress in areas such as seed breeding and deep-sea technology. Six national and 40 provincial scientific platforms have been established in Sanya for seed breeding. The Yachouwan Industrial Park is home to over 2,800 companies involved in seed selection, and revenues in this sector exceed 10 billion yuan.
In the field of deep-sea technology, Sanya is developing the Port of Nansha as an oceanographic research base. Yazhou Bay Park is already home to over 1,200 marine technology companies.
Five years of work have resulted in a transition to a diversified economy based on tourism, consumption, and and high technology. In 2024, the city's GDP surpassed 100 billion yuan for the first time.
