Russia may participate in development of 22 oil and gas fields in Tajikistan

Daler Juma emphasized that Tajikistan currently imports the majority of its oil and gas products from Russia

KAZAN, April 3. /TASS/. Tajikistan has invited Russian companies to participate in the development of 22 promising oil and gas fields, as well as in refining projects. The two countries are expected to determine their joint oil and gas projects this year, with work on their implementation potentially beginning in 2026, Tajikistan’s Minister of Energy and Water Resources Daler Juma told TASS.

"We have 22 promising oil and gas fields across the country. [With the Russian side,] we discussed issues related to extraction and refining. <…> We plan [with Russia] to identify priority fields this year. I believe that next year we will already have concrete plans for working with these fields," he stated.

Juma emphasized that Tajikistan currently imports the majority of its oil and gas products from Russia. The development of new oil and gas fields in the country would allow Tajikistan to begin exporting these resources southward.

Tajikistan has approximately 28 registered oil fields, with proven reserves exceeding 2 mln metric tons. The country operates 12 oil refineries. According to the Tajik Ministry of Energy, over 16,100 metric tons of oil were extracted domestically in 2024 - an amount insufficient to supply the nation’s refineries, necessitating continued imports of petroleum products and natural gas.

Russia remains the primary supplier of petroleum products to Tajikistan, delivering motor gasoline and diesel fuel to the Tajik market on preferential terms, exempt from customs duties.
