Lithuanian Railways reports 39-percent plunge in cargo traffic in 2022

The bulk of items transported in 2022 consisted of oil and petroleum products, construction material and fertilizers

VILNIUS, February 9. /TASS/. Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways) reported a 39-percent plunge in cargo transportation in 2022, the rail company revealed this Thursday.

"Due to the international sanctions against Russia and Belarus and the significant reduction in cargo transportation from these countries, cargo traffic as of year end 2022 declined by 20 mln metric tons or by 39%," the company disclosed.

The bulk of items transported in 2022 consisted of oil and petroleum products (9.6 mln metric tons), construction material (5.2 mln metric tons), and fertilizers (3.8 mln metric tons, yet 17.9 mln metric tons were transported a year earlier).
