HAIKOU, January 21. /TASS/. Duty free stores in China's Hainan province intend to sell more than 100 billion yuan ($15.8 billion) worth of goods this year. Xinhua News Agency reported on Friday with reference to the local government report.
Three new duty-free stores opened in Hainan in 2021, bringing the total number to 10. Last year, Hainan duty free stores earned 60.2 billion yuan (about $9.4 billion), up 84% from 2020.
According to Wang Xuan, deputy general manager of China Tourism Group Duty Free Corporation, a company operating duty-free stores, a new international shopping mall will open in Haikou, Hainan. It will be the largest duty-free mall in the world.
Hainan saw over 81 million tourists in 2021, a quarter more than last year. The total revenue from tourism in the province increased by almost 60% compared to the previous year and amounted to about 138.4 billion yuan (about $22 billion).
