STOCKHOLM, April 1. /TASS/. A surge of activity has been recorded at the Sundhnukur volcano in the southwestern part of Iceland, located on the Reykjanes Peninsula. The authorities have announced an evacuation of the town of Grindavik, according to the Icelandic broadcaster RUV.
The report states that magma accumulating inside the volcano began moving toward the surface on Tuesday at 6:30 a.m. This could potentially lead to an eighth eruption of the Sundhnukur volcano; however, there remains a possibility that the magma may never reach the surface.
Grindavik police have confirmed that evacuation measures have been completed, although eight residents chose to remain in their homes.
Iceland is home to 33 active volcanic systems. Since 2021, several eruptions have occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula, specifically in March 2021, August 2022, July 2023, and again in January, March, May, August, and November 2024.
