ANKARA, March 23. /TASS/. Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who was arrested in a corruption case, has called on the population to take part in mass rallies on Sunday.
"My dear citizens, today Turkey has lived through a great betrayal. A trial is not a trial, it is an extrajudicial execution. I call on our nation to fight for its rights responsibly. This is a matter of the future of our nation and our children. Be sure to vote for the future of Turkey today. Then gather in the squares in Sarachane in Istanbul [opposite the city hall] and in other provinces and express your position," he wrote on the social network X.
Speaking about voting, Imamoglu was referring to the primaries organized on Sunday by the opposition Republican People's Party to approve his candidacy for participation in the upcoming presidential elections. In addition to voting on this issue, the party is also holding so-called solidarity votes across Turkey, where any citizen can fill out a ballot in protest against the current situation in the country.
