Army seizes central regions of Syrian provinces Latakia and Tartus — TV

According to the TV channel, several militia members said they wished to negotiate with the new Syrian authorities

BEIRUT, March 7. /TASS/. The Syrian army, subordinate to the new authorities, captured the central regions of the provinces Latakia and Tartus, Al Arabiya TV channel reported.

It said the troops continue to comb the provinces in search of hiding armed supporters of former President Bashar al-Assad. The situation in Tartus is calm, it said.

According to the TV channel, several militia members said they wished to negotiate with the new Syrian authorities.

On March 6, clashes broke out in various areas of Latakia between security forces and armed groups supporting Assad. The fiercest fighting took place in the city of Jableh, where the Alawites, representatives of the religious minority to which the Assad family belongs, live. The Russia's Khmeimim airbase is located close to Jableh.

The security forces said that the armed men involved in the clashes were linked to former special forces commander Suhayl al-Hasan. According to the Al Jazeera TV channel, at least 15 Syrian security officials were killed in the fighting.

A curfew has been imposed in the provinces of Latakia, Tartus, and Homs due to the ongoing clashes, which have become the most widespread since the change in leadership in the Arab republic in December. There is a logistics center of the Russian Navy in Tartus.
